Neighborhood B Success Stories

November 26, 2008
Navy 2nd graders made web pages with Pixie. Students researched their insects in the library, then they drew a picture of their insect in Pixie and recorded some interesting insect facts. The Pixie pages were combined and converted to web pages for sharing. Very cute!
Lees Corner—the principal is blogging on the Parent Blackboard. Parents are encouraged to read and comment. The principal uses her blog to share her philosophy and to educate parents. For example, one blog addressed formative vs summative assessment, another talked of student thinking and learning styles.  Also, 5th graders learned outlining using Excel. A teacher returned from a workshop where she learned a technique for teaching students to outline using Excel. Lesson was very successful and used Excel in a unique way.
Fox Mill—In preparation for Global Awareness, the 5th grade teachers are trying to use one piece of software per month in 5th grade classrooms. They began in September with Photo Story. They’re working now with Inspiration. Next plans are for Google Earth and making math books for younger students.
Crossfield—has SMART Boards in every classroom now! They went from 5 mobile boards a couple of short years ago to one in every classroom today.
Oak Hill—three Oak Hill teachers have begun creating Google Lit Trips with their students. The lit trips will be a summary activity for their Literature Circle books. The students are very anxious to begin the Google Earth projects.

Neighborhood D

November 25, 2008

Stroll down Rt 50 and stop by almost any school and you’ll see lots of technology in use.  Here are a few examples:

  • Students were comparing and contrasting the  students of today with pilgrams using Pixie.
  • Students used Webblender to create storybook webpages in a “choose-your-own-adventure” style.
  • Students have been reading a nonfiction book and retelling the book using Photostory.  They explain the concept in their own words.
  • Teachers and SBTS are working to insure that interactive whiteboard lessons are available no matter what brand board is used.
  • Kindergarten teachers used  interactive whiteboard software to integrate their Native American Unit with their Mathematics Unit on Patterns.   Students create patterns of animals by dragging infinitely cloned animals onto a Native American Blanket background using a template file.

  •  Students did online research on person of the era  and then created Inspiration webs which guided them as they used MS Publisher to create “time person of the year” layouts

  • A  3rd grade created a trip of ancient egypt using Google Earth.

  • In their study of the  revolutionary war student will work in groups to create summary presentation using MS Powerpoint

  • Some schools are using personal response systems with much success.

  • At one site students in  grades 4-6 are participating in a “philosopher’s blog.”

  • Students in  2nd grade  are learning about the geographic features of the  United States by creating maps in Pixie

  • Students are beginning to learn how to embed web-based video into other multimedia presentations (such as MS PowerPoint)

  • Students in the foreign language immersion program are discovering the Spanish language capabilities of Pixie.

Centreville Elementary School Blogs

November 6, 2008

Fifth and sixth grade students at Centreville Elementary School are learning to blog!  After a lesson on blogging, students and teachers are off and running with this tool in 24/7 Learning.  Sixth grade teachers have set up different blogs for their reading groups.  Students participate in the blog by posting their own thoughts, and commenting on others.  Teachers love the fact they don’t have notebooks to collect, and are excited about the ease of grading online writing.  Students are excited, teachers are excited, what’s not to like about blogs?
